Springtails

Springtails have jointed legs, multiple body segments, and an exoskeleton; however, in contrast to insects and spiders their mouth parts are hidden in an internal cavity. They are small, usually less than ¼ inch long, and they inhabit leaf litter and other decaying organic matter. They are one of the most numerous groups of organisms. One cubic yard of soil may contain as many as 100,000 individuals. Over 7,500 species of springtail have been described, but no one knows how many species actually exist.
