Spiders
Like insects, spiders have jointed legs and an exoskeleton that protects and supports their body. However, they are distinguished from insects by their eight legs instead of six, two instead of three body segments, and lack of wings. These invertebrate animals are mostly predators or parasites on insects, so they play an important role in keeping the ever-burgeoning populations of insects at bay. There may be as many as 200,000 spiders world-wide and over 1,000 of these occur in California.
